To cut grass plant leaves to reduce the height.

Four main mechanical actions: - Cylinder, Rotary, Flail and Strimmer.
Hand shears can also be used.
Timing of use
A turf surface can be mown anytime of the year as long as the surface is dry and frost free.
Effects of incorrect procedure
Uneven surface levels: Long cut grass prevents the ball travelling on the outfield.
Incorrect mower setting rips the grass and allows diseases to attack, weeds to grow and leaf die back.
Equipment needed
Hand held strimmers, petrol pedestrian mower (cutting width 300mm - 900mm), ride on mowers or tractor powered unit.
Practical Tips
Best done when the grass leaf is dry for a clean cut.
When mowing a pitch, change the direction of cut each time.
