- When the assessor walks on the surface, does water rise to the surface or is there a squelching sound?
- Does the assessors’ footsteps leave surface indentations?
- Are there indicator plants such as Rushes?
- Is there laying water visible on the pitch surface?

Effects of Incorrect Procedure:
- Poor standard pitch/s.
- Loss of play due to poor surface conditions.
- Loss of revenue.
- Poor use of resources.
