Aim:
To cut grass plant leaves to reduce the height of a grass coverage.
Method:
Four main mechanical actions: -
- Cylinder
- Rotary
- Flail
- Strimmer
Can also be done by hand with shears.
Timing:
A turf surface can be mown anytime of the year as long as the surface is dry and frost free.
Effects of Incorrect Procedure:
- Uneven surface levels.
- Long cut grass prevents the ball travelling on the pitch surface.
- Incorrect mowers setting rips the grass and allow disease attack, weeds to grow and leaf die back.
Equipment Selection:
- Hand held strimmers.
- Petrol pedestrian mower with cutting width 300 mm to 900 mm. Ride on mowers and tractor powered unit.
Practical Tips:
- Best done when the grass leaf is dry for a clean cut.
- Apart from mowing a pitch change the direction of cut each time.
