For the dimensions and location of the three stumps that form the wickets (along with the bails) see:

The correct position for the stumps is shown on the marking out diagram.  The centre of middle stump at each end should be on the centre line of the pitch and the midline of all three stumps should be aligned with the back of the bowling crease (side nearest the standing umpire).

Initial location of the stump holes is often achieved using a steel stump position gauge which has three sharp prongs that can be aligned and then hammered into the pitch.  In a well-rolled pitch this is often the only way to get a start on locating the stumps and it creates an even stump spacing.  Just check that it is suitable for your diameter of stumps to achieve an overall wicket thickness of 9 in (22.86 cm).

After you have used the gauge, it might be necessary to hammer in an old stump to get the correct depth and width of hole for your stumps (make sure that the stump you use does not make a hole that is too large).

Wetting the soil in the stump hole can help to keep stumps secure as it will cause the soil to swell around the stump, as well as soften the soil so that you can seat the stumps more easily.  Do not do this immediately before inserting a stump or you will end up pushing muddy brown water out over your newly painted white lines!
