Aim
The aim is to prepare the square for the following season and maintain grass plant health.
What’s involved
Observation of the square to check for pests and diseases. This is achieved by:
1. Brushing the square
2. Mowing the square
3. Removing debris
4. Square aeration
5. Fertiliser application
6. Checking pipe drains.
Timing of use
Normally from October to March following necessary renovations.
Effects of incorrect procedure
Only work on the square when conditions are correct; if you damage the square in the winter it will reduce the number of pitches available in the summer.
Equipment needed
See Operations.
Practical Tips
Cease aeration before the end of February because if you have a dry spring the holes will be visible on the pitch surface and could possibly affect ball bounce.
