Topdressing

Aim:

• Restore surface levels.
• Top improve surface drainage with the addition of sand.

Method:

Distribute topdressing onto playing surface and brush in.

Timing:

End of season

Effects of Incorrect Procedure:

• Poor surface levels
• Degraded soil structure.
• Reduced conditions for microbial growth.
• Increased thatch layer.

Equipment:

• Tractor mounted distributor.
• Mechanical loader.
• Drag brush/mat or harrows.
• For small areas use a fork, rake and drag mat/brush.

Practical Tips:

• Due to the nature of the work, specialist contractors who have the appropriate machinery often complete this.
• Ensure that the area topdressed is over seeded and the seed raked in to ensure good seed/soil contact.
