What is it?

A material or mixture which supplies plant nutrients - usually Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) and Iron (FE).

How it’s used

Normally applied as a granular powder or liquid.

Timing of use

A basic fertiliser is applied generally every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season. Apply when it is going to rain or irrigation can be applied.

Effects of incorrect procedure

Applying in dry weather can scorch the grass. Too much nitrogen in the winter can produce soft, weak growth.

Equipment needed

Tractor and pedestrian fertiliser spreaders.

Practical Tips

Divide the application rate by two and apply in two directions to ensure good coverage.
