Every work activity will involve work equipment of some kind. Work equipment can be defined as any piece of machinery, tool, plant or other item needed for a worker to carry out their job.

Because of the range of equipment used in the maintenance of sports pitches it is important information, instruction, supervision and training is provided for the equipment to be used, the training needs to cover Personal Protective equipment to be used, safety features e.g. operator presence devices, pre-start checks, pre-operational checks and how to use and maintain the machine correctly as well as how to clean, and store the equipment.

There are a range of common hazards to consider:
  • Contact with moving parts
  • Sharp surfaces
  • Entrapment
  • Noise
  • Vibration
  • Flying debris
  • Entanglement
  • Fire
  • Explosion.

These will be highlighted in the risk assessment and suitable controls e.g. training, guards, maintenance, limit of exposure and Personal Protective Equipment are all controls that could be applied.
