To assess pitch for match readiness and carry out minor remedial work necessary to make it fit for play

Method

By visual inspection while walking the pitch.  Identify:

  • Stones/broken glass, needles
  • Loose divots/other surface damage
  • Hard surface due to ice/drought
  • Waterlogged surface
  • Surface levels (unfilled divots or sunken drainage trenches)
  • Dog faeces

Timing

Immediately prior to match (should allow min of 45 minutes to complete task and 3/4 people)

Effects of incorrect procedure

  • Delay to start of match to allow remedial action
  • Match postponed by officials
  • Player injury
  • Poor playability
  • Reputational damage to club and volunteer groundstaff
  • Potential damage to machinery or injury to groundstaff and volunteers

Practical Tips

  • Best completed by two to four people.  Sharing task ensures more detailed coverage and sufficient resources to complete task in time
  • Keep team/match officials informed of any issues
