Aim:
To assess pitch for match readiness and carry out minor remedial work necessary to make fit for play.
Method:
By visual inspection while walking the pitch, identify:
- Stones, broken glass and needles.
- Loose divots/other surface damage.
- Hard surface due to ice/drought.
- Waterlogged surface.
- Surface levels (unfilled divots or sunken drainage trenches).
- Dog faeces.
Timing:
Immediately prior to match (Should allow min of 45 mins to complete task and 3/4 people).
Effects of Incorrect Procedure:
- Delay to start of match to allow remedial action.
- Match postponed by officials.
- Player injury.
- Poor playability.
- Reputational damage to club and volunteer groundstaff.
- Potential damage to machinery or injury to groundstaff and volunteers.
Equipment:
- Gloves.
- Fork.
- Waste bag.
Practical Tips:
- Best completed by 2 to 4 people. Sharing task ensures more detailed coverage and sufficient resources to complete task in time.
- Keep team/match officials informed of any issues.
