Aim:

To assess pitch for match readiness and carry out minor remedial work necessary to make fit for play.

Method:

By visual inspection while walking the pitch, identify:

  • Stones, broken glass and needles.
  • Loose divots/other surface damage.
  • Hard surface due to ice/drought.
  • Waterlogged surface.
  • Surface levels (unfilled divots or sunken drainage trenches).
  • Dog faeces.

Timing:

Immediately prior to match (Should allow min of 45 mins to complete task and 3/4 people).

Effects of Incorrect Procedure:

  • Delay to start of match to allow remedial action.
  • Match postponed by officials.
  • Player injury.
  • Poor playability.
  • Reputational damage to club and volunteer groundstaff.
  • Potential damage to machinery or injury to groundstaff and volunteers.

Equipment:

  • Gloves.
  • Fork.
  • Waste bag.

Practical Tips:

  • Best completed by 2 to 4 people. Sharing task ensures more detailed coverage and sufficient resources to complete task in time.
  • Keep team/match officials informed of any issues.
