November maintenance

The end of the playing season doesn’t mean the end of work on the pitches. Cutting may still be necessary right through this month depending on the temperatures. It’s important to manage the growth of the grass through the winter. This will help maintain the density and will avoid taking off excessive amounts when the pitches are needed again.

Slitting can also be carried out during this period as can surface grooming. The focus for the grooming should be light brushing to remove any wetness from the plant, which can aid the ingress of disease and the brushing will also help disperse and wormcast or surface debris, like leaves which have fallen from nearby trees.

All these activities are reliant on the pitch not being too wet. If there is any doubt, it’s better to leave to a more suitable day. Activities carried out in the wrong conditions can do more damage to the pitch.
