Aim:

  • To help maintain the quality, durability & playability of the pitch
  • Maintain surface levels and playability.

Method:

  • Recover & replace divots.
  • Lightly fork area around divot to alleviate compaction and smearing.
  • For lighter soils, lightly rake surface before replacing divot.

Timing:

Directly after match.

Effects of Incorrect Procedure:

  • Damage to mowers.
  • Delay to start of match to allow remedial action.
  • Match postponed by officials.
  • Players injured.
  • Controversial decision.
  • Reported to league.

Equipment:

  • Hand Fork.
  • Rake.

Practical Tips:

  • Best completed by 2 to 4 people. Sharing task ensures more detailed coverage.
  • Lift depressed turf and gentle pressing with the foot is the best way to return/replace divots.
  • Do not forget the linesman areas.
