There are several reasons to brush the pitch, it will clean out the surface post game, remove dew, disperse earthworm casts, and to stand up the grass prior to cutting.
Following a game or training a rotary action brush either pedestrian or tractor mounted can be used to remove the cut off parts of the grass which are lying either ion the surface or within the grass on the pitch. A collector must be used with this type of machine as the grass needs to be removed from the pitch so it will help lessen the rate that thatch builds up.
A drag brush can also be used to help maintain the pitch. The drag brush is used to remove dew, break up wormcasts and stand the grass up before cutting. A drag brush is simply towed behind a tractor or there is a pedestrian brush which is simply dragged behind as you walk.
