Aim:

  • To help maintain the quality, durability & playability of the pitch.
  • Alleviate compaction.
  • Increase gaseous exchange within the soil to improve grass growth.

Method:

  • For small areas a hand fork can be used.
  • For the whole pitch, tractor mounted equipment should be used.

Timing:

Any time post match (monthly aeration would benefit the pitch growing conditions).

Effects of Incorrect Procedure:

  • Excessive wear on pitch.
  • Poor root growth.
  • Impeded drainage.
  • Loss of playability.
  • Loss of revenue.

Equipment:

  • Hand fork.
  • Tractor mounted aerator.

Practical Tips:

  • Unless trained, volunteers should not be allowed to use the tractor-mounted equipment.
  • Hand forking is best carried out by 2 to 4 people. Sharing task ensures more detailed coverage.
  • Review the soil profile by taking a core.
