Aim:
- To help maintain the quality, durability & playability of the pitch.
- Alleviate compaction.
- Increase gaseous exchange within the soil to improve grass growth.
Method:
- For small areas a hand fork can be used.
- For the whole pitch, tractor mounted equipment should be used.
Timing:
Any time post match (monthly aeration would benefit the pitch growing conditions).
Effects of Incorrect Procedure:
- Excessive wear on pitch.
- Poor root growth.
- Impeded drainage.
- Loss of playability.
- Loss of revenue.
Equipment:
- Hand fork.
- Tractor mounted aerator.
Practical Tips:
- Unless trained, volunteers should not be allowed to use the tractor-mounted equipment.
- Hand forking is best carried out by 2 to 4 people. Sharing task ensures more detailed coverage.
- Review the soil profile by taking a core.
