Weather has a huge impact on sport – particularly on natural pitches and playing fields. When it comes to rain they often experience too much or too little of a good thing.

As climate change apparently starts to disrupt our traditional weather patterns, Sport England is working with Cranfield University and the national governing bodies (NGBs) of pitch-based sports to:

  • Understand the potential impact on sport of long-term climate change

  • Identify the sports and locations which will experience the greatest impact

  • Consider how sport can adapt and mitigate against the impact of any changes
  • Develop guidance to help organisations manage the short and long term challenges.

The Drought Report sets out the detailed issues while the Drought Advice Note for Clubs advises clubs how to deal with water usage restrictions and use water more efficiently to maintain their pitches and courts.

These two documents are supported by frequently asked questions developed in response to questions we have received from sports clubs.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has produced specific advice for cricket clubs, which can be found on their website.
